Johannesburg is on the highveld, and the altitude (1 694 metres) keeps the average summer temperatures below 30 degrees Celsius. In winter, over night temperatures can drop to below freezing point.
Summer(mid-October to mid-February)
Summer is renowned for its afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly, leaving a warm, earthy, uniquely African smell in the air. Traditionally hot, sunny weather.
Autumn(mid-February to April)
Autumn (fall) which can sometimes last only 2 weeks, does offer the best weather. Very little rain falls over the whole country, and it is warm but not too hot, getting colder as the season progresses.
Winter(May to July)
Winter on the highveld offer dry, sunny, crisp days and cold nights interspersed with cold snaps when snow falls on the berg.
Spring(August to mid-October)
The August winds dust off winter and first wash of rain heralds in Spring on the highveld. With the first hint of warmth and lilac haze over the forest that is Joburg, the magic carpet of Jacaranda blossom transforms and renews.
